In the latest issue of DC’s Robin, Damian Wayne reveals that he’s taking more cues from Dick Grayson’s Nightwing than he is from his father Batman.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Robin #15
In the latest issue of DC’s Robin, Damian Wayne proves he’s taking more cues from Nightwing than he is from his own father Batman. While Batman’s youngest and current Robin has been on a tumultuous journey in recent comics, it seems as though he’s finally finding his own path and purpose. However, it definitely resembles Dick Grayson’s mission more than Bruce Wayne’s based on this most recent issue.
As seen in previous issues of Robin, Damian has reconciled with both his father and mother Talia al Ghul, the new leader of the League of Assassins. However, the time on his own saw Robin entering the League of Lazarus’ deadly tournament as a means to prove himself and determine what he wants for his future. The contest of deadly fighters took place on the powerful and mysterious Lazarus Island, deriving its power from the classic resurrecting waters used by Ra’s al Ghul before his more permanent death during DC’s Shadow War. However, Robin ended up uniting the fighters against the League and Mother Soul after he discovered that their deaths and resurrections were being used to summon the dark demon known as Nehza.

Now, the new Robin #15 from Joshua Williamson and Roger Cruz sees Robin choosing a new path rather than fully reuniting with Batman or Talia. Electing to go his own way, Damian is ready to become his own man with an all-new mission. Upon leaving his parents, it’s revealed that Damian intends to reshape Lazarus Island with those he fought in the tournament such as Green Arrow’s secret son Connor Hawke. Wanting to turn it into a sanctuary for outcasts, it seems as though Robin is actually taking cues from Nightwing (who’s been similarly reshaping his city of Blüdhaven).
In Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s Nightwing, Dick Grayson has been creating new infrastructure and foundations to help the people in his city who are the most in need and have been taken advantage of the most by Blüdhaven’s criminals. He’s doing more to uplift those he protects beyond simply punching the bad guys. To that end, it seems as though Robin is doing something similar with Lazarus Island which is a pretty fun connection (even if it isn’t direct). After all, Damian was Nightwing’s sidekick first before he was Batman’s.
As a result, it seems Damian has been influenced by Dick more than Bruce. Given the significant bumps in the road Batman and Robin have had in their relationship as father and son, it makes sense that Damian would perhaps take more cues from others in his life whom he admires, care for, and respects beyond the Dark Knight. At any rate, it’s going to be exciting to see what Robin does to redeem his new island with Nightwing continuing to do the same with Blüdhaven in his own DC series.
